Etna Eruption 2002/03 itinerary will lead us to discover the the less touristy but for sure the most interesting side of the volcano from a naturalistic point of view. We will be at the altitude of 1700 meters, between the 2002-03 lava flow and the magnificent Ragabo pine forest – from the Arab Rahab (Forest). The landscape is chameleon-like and it changes as we will cross the 2002-03 flow, giving us astonishing and extreme views; the pine forest, the past lava flows and the typical mountain vegetation, with the astragalus, the boxthorn tree, the soapworth, and some beech trees. At 2000 meters we will get to the lateral crater of Monte Nero, created during the 2002-03 eruption. There we will stand in front of the summit area of the volcano and surrounded by the extinct craters of 1879, with a wide view on the Peloritani Mountains and the Alcantara Valley. Proceeding through a field of volcanic bombs, we will visit the craters of 1923 to head back down towards the Ragabo pine forest.
The length of the route is about 7 km.
This itinerary involves a moderate difficulty level, as we will hike on trails and forest tracks.
